In 1970, DC lured Kirby, cocreator of the Fantastic Four and X-Men, from rival Marvel Comics by promising free rein on his imagination. The monumental Fourth World emerged from that promise. Depicting a cosmic struggle between the godlike denizens of the planets New Genesis and Apokolips, it unfurled in four separate serials: the flagship, New Gods; The Forever People, focused on a hippielike band of young godlings; Mister Miracle, featuring the super escape artist of that name; and Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen, in which Kirby linked Fourth World to the preexisting DC Universe. The ambitious project was soon derailed by disappointing sales, though many characters Kirby created for it appear in various DC titles to this day. The first of four volumes collecting the whole megillah presents Kirby at his least distilled and most unfettered, generating outlandishly inventive concepts and larger-than-life characters to suit his dynamic drawing and feverishly overwrought dialogue. Prepare To Enter The Fourth World...

First Impressions:

The Cover is gorgeous. A larger than life copy of a close-up on Orion - very evocative of the whole Kirby Fourth World experience.

The "heft" of the tome is very light, feeling more like a trade-paper back than a hardcover edition.

The reason for this feather-weight feel is soon obvious. The paper used in this volume is quite unexpected. My initial reaction was one of disappointment and dismay. The paper looks and feels like a higher quality newsprint, not at all what one would expect for a book with a $50.00 cover price! Upon closer examination, there does not seem to be immediate concerns; the paper itself seems quite sturdy - it doesn't have the same feeling of shoddiness that regular newsprint entails and the ink seems to be quite permanent and smear-proof. Upon further examination, I actually began to feel quite good about this rather unorthodox choice. The paper really evokes the feel of an early 70s comic books and it really carries the somewhat garish colors of the original comic (which are faithfully reproduced btw) very well. It really suits the emotional, nostalgia experience.

For those that care about such things, the binding is glued, not sewn, but seems to be well-done and very strong.

"Wow". Reading or re-reading this volume is just plain fun. For those of us who grew up reading/loving comics in the 60s, there was probably no bigger shock than discovering that Jack Kirby, the heart and soul of the Marvel Universe, was jumping ship to DC. One thing that Jack insisted on for his DC tenure was more creative control of his output. This book represents nothing less than Kirby Unleashed. In re-reading these stories - clearly written for a different era (this was coming on the heels of the end of the 60s after all!) one can still feel the raw electricity, the sheer exuberance of the unbridled creativity pouring from Kirby. Sure, a lot of the dialogue is awkward - a middle-aged man trying to capture the "groovy" language of the youth culture. Nevertheless, these works are nothing short of, well, utterly psychedelic, man! More concisely, Kirby was creating an astounding new mythos which would profoundly change the way the comic book universe of DC would work henceforth and which would forever impact the entire world of superhero comics (again). These are the first chapter of that new world. Read them for their place in the history of the comic book, read them for the enjoyment!

In summation, this is well worth the Amazon discount price. I look forward to future volumes.

Volume one: Off to a rough, but interesting start

Kirby's move to DC after his incredible run at Marvel was one that had long range effects on DC comics. He introduced Darkseid and The New Gods, characters that DC has been going back to you for over three decades. This first volume introduces the characters of Kirby's "Fourth World," his concept of an epic battle between good and evil, where Earth is caught in the middle. It's uneven in quality and the ideas are not fully developed in the beginning but this is where some of comics most outlandish and fascinating stories began. One thing you'll find won't improve is Kirby's dialogue, which is often ungainly and at times painful, but the concepts and art move it all forward. And it all started with..."Jimmy Olson?"
Jimmy Olsen-Yes Kirby wanted to start where his grand plans would not be weighed down by expectations. But Olsen didn't work out. DC in their fear of change redrew Superman's face, a noticeable and odd action that actually distracted from the art. The art also suffered from the inking of Vince Colletta, an inker known for his speed, not his talent. The story kicks right into gear re-introducing The Newsboy Legion and The Guardian in the midst of stories about cloning run wild. I wish I could say it works, but this was a bad fit from the beginning. A Don Rickles storyline? Ouch!
The Forever People- This group of "super kids," as Superman refers to them, is visually interesting, but lacks the template that Kirby puts in place for The New Gods or Mister Miracle. The characters remain ciphers and with the exception of Big Bear, the well-spoken strong man no one stands out in these early stories. The deus ex machina of Infinity Man, who arrives when The Forever People switch places with him, makes the stories predictable form early on.
Mister Miracle- Kirby's master escape artist plays to Kirby's strengths. Kirby's incredible mechanical designs with their futuristic, almost organic feel, coupled with the constant action makes these comics come alive in ways that Jimmy Olsen and the Forever People do not. Creating a very likeable lead with Scott Free, Mr. Miracle has all the elements that will make it the most successful of Kirby's series.
The New Gods- This is the book where Kirby's ideas really come to fruition. The setting of New Genesis with its pastoral beauty against the techno-horror of Apokolips is a wonder, but the characters are the true essence of the story. The brutal warrior, Orion becomes New Genesis' main champion against the menace of Darkseid and his minions. Kirby starts this book with immediate action moving the battleground from Apokolips to Earth and creating a sense of impending danger much more forcefully then he does in the other books.
While not as successful here as he will be in later stories, Kirby sets the tone for his work in Volume I. If your reliving your youth have fun, and if you are new, hang on; the ride gets better.

Doing right by the King

Jeez, some of you guys are scary. Sadly, not knowing what constitutes "newsprint" is only a symptom. The paper stock this collection is printed on is much thicker, and holds ink far better than newsprint. As a friend of mine said, you can actually read this book in daylight, because it's not as absurdly glossy and reflective as the usual high-end archival comics reprint collection paper. Kudos to DC for understanding and respecting the proper context for this material. Newsprint wouldn't keep, but this will. The blacks are solid, the colors are properly saturated, Kirby's story, not the paper, shines.

Things are as they should be here. Flat colour for the most part, not the absurd misuse of computer shading so prevalent in most modern material (digital color can be done right, of course, but we rarely see it in mainstream comics). No "retro" fake halftoning here. Instead, an attention to subtlety, without jarring, attention-grabbing production techniques that have nothing to do with, and add nothing to the content. Asking for anything different is akin to wanting to "improve" black and white by colouring, or line art by painting. Let's get it straight: more "realistic" is not necessarily better. Slicker, glossier, thicker, more more more, is not necessarily better. It certainly wouldn't be here.

Among the blessings we should count: the collection is beautifully designed. with the dust jacket a different image from the actual cover beneath it. That's not lazy production.

And the contents, awesome as they are, will only get better in subsequent volumes as Vince Colletta is replaced as inker by Mike Royer.

I was very impressed with the book, from valuable content to how easy it was to read author's great insights of the start up evolution though the J curve. It really maps out well the steps that every Entrepreneur should know and understand to navigate the process of starting up and growing the business.
What I really appreciated about the book, is that author openly describes his experiences, struggles and victories as an entrepreneur and also gives advice from prospective of an angel investor. That gave me a better understanding of what each party in this eco-system needs and what each one gets out of the J curve steps. I wish I had this book to guide me when I embarked on launching my Interior Design business in 2008, as I didn't know there was a predictable pattern that all business go through and that I'm not an odd ball struggling thought the J curve.

Just to name few highlight areas of many; from understanding many types of personality and mix of strength and weaknesses that can be successful in starting / growing the business (even though popular media and articles list only certain mix of traits as desirable and required). Then the morph phase where he has highlighted that even most successful entrepreneurs didn't nail their business right away and had to significantly change the direction to get it right. Then it was great to understand clear outline of the distinction between "missionary" and "mercenary" types of CEO and founders since there is so much glorifying in media going on about mercenary types who are ruthlessly making money while sometimes not considering to leave this World as a better place (though that is changing with the new generations). I was always feeling that is a less desirable route in growing the business.
Overall, this book is so full of great advice that is easy to follow, and I know I will be going back to it to re-read it, as it is hard to find a good, and honest start up guidance that is easy to digest, and make sense of when you going through the steps of J curve.

The Start-up J Curve nails it!

I highly recommend this book for both first time and seasoned entrepreneurs. For first timers, it is an essential playbook that will save you considerable time and effort so you focus on the right activities. For seasoned entrepreneurs, it serves as a critical reminder that there are no short cuts before you scale even if you have done it before.
I cut my teeth on my first start up venture and reading each step of the J-Curve was like a lesson review of my start up journey. To a degree, I would say that I wish I read this book prior, but there is also something about the experience of going through the peaks and valleys of building a start up business that makes me appreciate The Startup J-Curve that much more.
While there are many “how to” books out there, few can directly connect the process of launching a start up with rich, personal accounts of what to do when things do not go accordingly as Love does. In many aspects, The Startup J-Curve feels autobiographical. Love takes you on his journey as a serial entrepreneur and is paying it forward by sharing a repeatable method for entrepreneurial success.

Must-Read for Entrepreneurs!

The Start-Up J Curve should be a must-read for anyone who is thinking about starting a small business, as well as long time entrepreneurs who are focused on innovation and continued growth. I started my small business in 2003, and really wish this book had been available at that point.

Reading this book helped me understand why certain things happened as my business evolved and I see now (as a result of this book) some things that could have been done differently that would have had a positive impact.

Even though I have now been in business for more than a decade, I feel like the information I learned from reading this book will help me and my company continue to grow and become more successful moving forward. The angry ranting of an obscure, small-party politician, the first volume of Mein Kampf was virtually ignored when it was originally published in 1925. Likewise the second volume, which appeared in 1926. The book details Hitler's childhood, the "betrayal" of Germany in World War I, the desire for revenge against France, the need for lebensraum for the German people, and the means by which the National Socialist party can gain power. It also includes Hitler's racist agenda and his glorification of the "Aryan" race. The few outside the Nazi party who read it dismissed it as nonsense, not believing that anyone could--or would--carry out its radical, terrorist programs. As Hitler and the Nazis gained power, first party members and then the general public were pressured to buy the book. By the time Hitler became chancellor of the Third Reich in 1933, the book stood atop the German bestseller lists. Had the book been taken seriously when it was first published, perhaps the 20th century would have been very different.

Beyond the anger, hatred, bigotry, and self-aggrandizing, Mein Kampf is saddled with tortured prose, meandering narrative, and tangled metaphors (one person was described as "a thorn in the eyes of venal officials"). That said, it is an incredibly important book. It is foolish to think that the Holocaust could not happen again, especially if World War II and its horrors are forgotten. As an Amazon.com reader has pointed out, "If you want to learn about why the Holocaust happened, you can't avoid reading the words of the man who was most responsible for it happening." Written eight years before he assumed power in Germany, the book lays it all out: his megalomania, his conspiratorial obsession with Jews and his lust for power. For all who claimed they didn't know, all they had to do was read Mein Kampf to know of Hitler's intentions.

The translation closest to the Original German

There are four or five currently popular English translations of Mein Kampf. I'll say a few words about the translations. Then I'll say a few things about the book.

This translation, The Reynal & Hitchcock is my personal favorite. It was translated by a scholarly committee and is taken directly from the German. I consider it closest to the original and many people agree. There are, however, others who prefer the Murphy translation and yet others who claim the Manheim is superior.

The Reynal & Hitchcock has no negative comments about Hitler. Nor does it appear to endorse his words. On the other hand, the Manheim has a definite bias. I feel that the Reynal & Hitchcock is the most fair and true to the actual words of Hitler.

This book is a difficult read because the Germans don't seem to know what a period is. The sentences go on and on with only a comma now and then. But in the Reynal & Hitchcock you'll find unfamiliar words explained. The notes and annotations are absolutely wonderful.

I own the 1939 edition and love it. One other thing I'll say is this: The name of Henry Ford was taken out of Manheim. I'm not sure if it's in Murphy or not. But it is in Reynal & Hitchcock.

Now a few words about Mein Kampf -- the book. I assume if you're reading this review you already know about Mein Kampf and have perhaps read it or read part of it. But if not, perhaps a few words are in order.

Mein Kampf is an interesting look into the mind of Hitler and it is interesting how we can see some of the same characteristics running in numerous people in office today. If we don't know history, we're apt to repeat it.

Indeed, Hitler might even have won a Nobel Peace Prize based on his promises and the excitement he created in people before they really got to know him had the prize been given in those days! Certainly such greats as JFK and Churchill gave him glowing compliments.

Why did people follow Hitler? Knowing what we do now, it's easy to think the German people were stupid. The truth is the country had suffered a severe punishing war and hyperinflation -- money was worthless. They needed a real leader.

Hitler promised everyone everything. He was just the "right" person for that particular time. If times had been different, he would not have risen to power in all likelihood.

I find Hitler part genius, part psychopath.

The book -- no matter what translation -- is a must-read. It's a classic. It's a book that gives you insight into one of the most important minds of the 20th Century and in all of history.

Why should you read any translation of Mein Kampf? Sun Tzu said you must know your enemy. We read about those we regard as dangerous, or wrong or criminal in order to avoid that type of individual ever encroaching into power again. We also read to understand that person in relationship to the times in which he lived.

Just as Hitler knew his dreaded enemy, the Communist Party and Karl Marx, we should know Hitler, the Fascist dictator. Hitler didn't take on an issue or an enemy without knowing it inside-out. In that regard, he was brilliant. He knew what he was fighting. He knew the enemy.

I highly recommend this translation and the book. If you want a totally Americanized translation, consider Mein Kampf (The Ford Translation) and for a delightful read that will tell you all about the life of Hitler in a most colorful way, read Adolf Hitler: The Definitive Biography by the prize winning author, John Toland.

A truly PEOPLE'S EDITION of Mein Kampf!

Don't believe the negative reviews... If you pass on this edition, you will truly miss out on a fantastic translation of Mein Kampf!

I have read the 1943 Manheim translation, the 1939 Murphy translation, the 1939 Reynal & Hitchcock translation and the 2009 Ford translation. All have their own particular merits, and all appeal to certain audiences. The Manheim appeals to the scholarly and is indeed a faithful, word-for-word translation of Mein Kampf. However, it is incomplete. Further, following it in places can be very confusing in the English language, and many people I know have simply put it down in frustration. It's obviously a scholar's edition, as the German-language footnotes attest.

The Reynal & Hitchcock edition is a better flowing edition than the Manheim, in my opinion, but has been out of print since 1943, when the Manheim was published by Houghton-Mifflin. Why? Because Houghton-Mifflin did not want to pay royalties to Reynal & Hitchcock for their translation, so Ralph Manheim was commissioned for a new translation, which is, in fact, clumsier than the original.

The Murphy edition is far shorter, a fairly easy read for those who speak/read British English and have a decent vocabulary. However, it is paraphrased - as Murphy read a paragraph and put it into his own words. Not Hitler's words, but in most places, true to the meaning. But in some places, he misses the point (as Ford's book about the MEIN KAMPF translation controversy points out). So if you want Hitler, you won't get it from Murphy...

Onto Ford's translation... The thing I like about this translation is that it strikes me as a true PEOPLE's EDITION of Mein Kampf. It is COMPLETE and TRUE to the original, but being a PEOPLE'S EDITION does NOT mean that it is dumbed-down. It simply means it is readable, flows well and keeps the reader's interest throughout. EVERY READER'S INTEREST. And that was exactly what the author, Adolf Hitler, wanted. He wanted EVERYONE in his country to read his book. Not just the university professor. It wasn't for the elite few. It was for the bus driver, the soldier, the unemployed - it made no difference! It was for everyone. In German, it flowed (and still flows) fine. But when translated to English, it doesn't flow so well, as various translations prove. However, with the Ford translation, it flows VERY WELL. It has been restored to its former status and is once again for EVERYONE.

Couple this with Ford's explanatory notes in the text as well as his added 27 pages of pictures that show key people and places mentioned by Hitler, and this makes an edition of Mein Kampf that has yet to be beaten.

An incredibly valuable and fascinating translation

While not an easy read, I rather enjoy this translation and find it quite useful. The good news is -- once you get into it, you find it's not all that difficult to read. You begin to understand the message and the translation.

James Murphy started the translation. Ford, president of Elite Minds, publisher of the book, says Murphy embellished it, left things out, added things, and used academic words that make it hard to read.

He says he has not changed any wording and he has left all mistakes as they were. He adds, and probably correctly, that much was lost in the translation and that it sounded more like Murphy and less like Hitler. Murphy wrote for the intellectual while Hitler spoke to the working class.

Little needs to be said about the words of Hitler. I enjoy reading Mein Kampf. That certainly is not an endorsement of the man or his movement. Mein Kampf is an interesting look into the mind of this man and it is interesting how we can see some of the same characteristics running in numerous people in office today. If we don't know history, we're apt to repeat it.

While this translation can be awkward, I recommend it to you. It is close to the original, which gives it incredible value. Moreover, if you're a careful reader with a decent vocabulary and perhaps a good dictionary, it's not that difficult to read. It might turn out to be your preferred version.

If you're interested and fascinated by World War 1 or World War 11 and most importantly, if you want to understand history and how the words of Hitler changed the course of history, you need to read all translations.

Highly recommended.

Call this book the Management Bible

Ken Blanchard went on to become the management guru of the 90s, writing countless books that can be found right here on Amazon. However, this text book is where is all began. I call it a text book because it is. This text has been used and is still used in management schools around the nation. Written with Hersey and Johnson, this book is the definitive foundation text on how to manage organizational behavior as it pertains to managing people. Following are a couple key points:

1) Diagnosis: It is a manager's job to modify their management style to employee needs. Evaluting employee needs and corresponding management styles can be easily done using Situational Leadership tools (found in book).

2) Intervention: Performance can be managed using the fundamental postive reinforcement psychology. Further, by consciously indentifying needs, performance can be improved more rapidly.

3) Evaluation: If behavioral change does not occur, the individual may not be in the right role.

This sounds dry and obvious by today's standards, but it wasn't when the first edition of this book was published (1980s). Further, most modern organiztional and management theory is based on this book. There is still gold to dig from its pages.

Terrific book! Not your regular textbook.

I do not have a lot of time because I am in a masters in education program so I will be short and to the point. This was a required book for a class, but I was quite pleasantly surprised to discover that this book is actually quite well written. Some parts are even amusing. As I said, not your regular textbook! It is also chock full of pithy quotations. Enjoy!

A genuine, timeless classic...

In his classic book, "Hiroshima," John Hersey simply and powerfully tells the story of six residents of Hiroshima who were dramatically and traumatically impacted by the dropping of the atomic bomb near the end of World War II. I've always been fascinated by World War II history and have deeply appreciated works of art like "Band of Brothers" or "Ghost Soldiers," which help to bring humanity and complexity into our perceptions of war, which are too often overly abstract and neatly simplistic (good guys vs. bad guys, hopefully the good guys won). But "Hiroshima" does something even more challenging but no less important for American readers, bringing that humanity and complexity from the perspective of the "enemy," in this case Japanese doctors, clergy, mothers, and office workers with no particular political or military associations.

The central strength of the book is its gripping account of the lives of these six individuals, setting the stage before the bomb was dropped, describing the events that immediately followed the immense explosion, and following the impact of that cataclysmic event in the ensuing months and years. In fact, a final chapter, written 40 years after the original publication of the book, gives another update for the six featured people, four decades down the road. And, in all of this, Hersey manages to tell a powerful, vivid story without getting preachy or political. At the end of the day, we get a sense of the devastation, a hint of the suffering, a glimmer of the confusion, and just a faint taste of the impact of that first atomic bomb. It's a worthy experience for anyone, from any nationality or political persuasion.

I do have one minor quibble with Hersey's approach. With only six subjects to describe, I found it odd and unnecessarily limited in scope that two of them were physicians and two of them were Christian clergy (though one was Catholic and one was Protestant). Had he found a more diverse cross-section of Japanese society, I think that the main strength of the book would have been augmented. But this critique is truly insignificant within the context of the power of Hersey's work.

Ultimately, part of my experience in appreciating this book comes from a cultural upbringing that celebrated the United States' military might and historical successes with an abstract triumphalist tone, failing to bother to understand the devastating effects that war brings to all sides of any military conflict. As I've studied and learned as much military history as I can, my perspective has thankfully become more nuanced, and I'm mindful of the dangers of looking at an event like the bombing of Hiroshima as nothing more than a good old fashioned Yankee whooping. "Hiroshima" helps to counter that cheap view of human worth by shedding light on the horrors of war, from the often untold perspective of the defeated. It's true that the victors get to write history, and I'm glad that Hersey took the brave step to make sure that the impact on the vanquished is at least known and understood on some level. He does so without making sweeping political implications, without suggesting that the Hiroshima bombing was necessarily a mistake. He merely says that this event happened, that it was tragically awful for many people, that real people suffered and died, and that we would do well to be aware of those realities when we think back in history at war. I'd recommend the book to absolutely anyone who can see the potential value of being stretched and challenged in that direction.

Real history that should be required reading

If you never read another book about what war really is, read this one. Stunning, unforgettable, amazing what we are capable of doing to our fellow man. This is the type of history book that your children need to be reading; one that is reality based, one that creates discussion and reflection on what they value in life and how they view the world events of yesteryear and today. One word picture that I cannot get out of my mind is the description of the shadows of objects and people being emblazoned on structures by the flash of the bomb. The objects and people were incinerated but their presence in place and time was recorded for the survivors and observers. I found Hiroshima thought provoking and although I do not read/study historical events in depth as a rule, I find that I am moved to learn more about our history before someone tries to re-write it and make the truth disappear before our very eyes.

A difficult book, and one that must be read

As the world devolves into autocratic leadership and dictatorships that have the ability to destroy the world, it is important to look at what we have done and consider the danger that rests in the hands of governments that use military solutions to complex problems. This book graphically and objectively depicts the horrible results of our dropping an atomic bomb on the citizens of Hiroshima. War at any level is abhorrent, but this was inhumane and horrific. An important book for the ages..
