The Gorilla (Not) in the Room

I love sharing Daniel Quinn's books with people, but sometimes "the Gorilla in the room" gets in the way - certain people just can't get past learning from a telepathic silverback (it's an old human prejudice, refusal to learn from animals).�

Quinn's new book, THE INVISIBILITY OF SUCCESS, a collection of lectures, is the perfect gift for that friend who's ready for the ideas but not ready for the gorilla.� It contains Quinn's message in easy chunks - the ISHMAEL books worked well because they flowed as dialogue, and this book also flows like speech.� Additionally it contains some illustrations (some of them humorous) to help explain Quinn's ideas.

As with Quinn's books ISHMAEL, MY ISHMAEL and THE STORY OF B, the basic premise is that “saving the world” is only possible when we as a culture begin to see the human race in perspective as members (not masters) of the community of life on this planet. And this means we must re-examine our foundations of thought, our philosophies and mythologies, even our religions.

One example of an idea in this book that really spun my head: At a conference about agricultural advancements called “Technologies for Peace,” Quinn delivered a lecture called “Technologies For That Other War,” writing, “For any culturally literate Wetserner, a foundation piece of wisdom found in the Bible will spring to mind on the subject of technologies for war versus technologies for peace. Here it is, from the second chapter of Isaiah: '...They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.'” But Quinn puts his own spin on this popular saying: it is not actually “people turning from war to peace but rather people turning from one war to another war – from inTRAspecies war to an inTER species war. From the conquest of nations to the conquest of nature.” (Invisibility of Success, page 113).

Wow – I have heard that “swords into plowshares” (and the corresponding passage in Joel 3:10 where plowshares are hammered into swords) all my life, more times than I can count, and it has never once occurred to me that the plowshare is a weapon too – a weapon of mass destruction at work every day in South American rainforests, and this war against the rest of nature is a lot more dangerous for us all than armies clashing on a battlefield.

For those of you who have read Quinn's ISHMAEL books and wonder whether or not this will contain anything you haven't seen before - yes it does.� While it suffices as a summary of Quinn's previously printed ideas, this book puts the material into different shapes, incorporating information and parables not found in his other books, and offers further ideas for those of us dealing with that daunting question: I've read Ishmael - what do I DO now?

A Quinn book that finally sheds some light on HOW the world will be saved.

A must have for any fan of Daniel Quinn's works. It's pretty much what you get in Ishmael but in separate short lectures. These are actual lectures that he has given before at different events (like a real life Story of B). Each one starts off with some interesting commentary of the lecture you are about to read. Like his other books, this one has a great ending. The ending is one of hope that tells how the world will be saved, if it does get saved. I say no more. Buy the book but don't skip to the end. These lectures were specially selected and put in an order that needs to be read from front to back in linear fashion. It's a short read, even a slow reader will be able to cut through this pretty fast and it's a great reference tool to use too.

I'm guessing this book would be good for Daniel Quinn readers who would like to refine their understanding of his thinking as well as for people who haven't read Daniel Quinn books before but who would like to "grok" his message in a non-fiction format. It's a neat, portable representation of Daniel's ideas. It's very welcome to this reader! The ideas presented are challenging but always rewarding. This isn't a book of essays about permaculture, but permaculturists may be interested to read Daniel's thoughts bearing on that subject in the closing essay.

Jon Hop tops himself once again in his 4th installment of the "So You Want to Play Go?" series. Aimed at dan-level players, Hop illustrates advanced topics with pristine clarity, making the reader wonder, "Why haven't I realized before how simple this concept was?"

It's hard to believe that such a feat is possible in teaching dan-level techniques in Go, but Hop's approach is a winner: he illustrates exactly the points that dan-level players need to learn in real game scenarios. The audience of this book are already familiar with the fundamentals taught in earlier parts of the series, and Hop's teaching technique not only explains advanced topics through real-life games, but also leaves the reader with the know-how for analyzing and learning new advanced topics from their own games.

Before reading the book, I would review my games from time to time, but O didn't always know what to look for in my games. The sheer number of examples that Hop goes through in his book gave me the practice I needed to learn how to review my games the right way - and to learn new things every time.

The icing on the cake is the joseki that Hop teaches yough throughout the journey of reading his book. Playing on a server like KGS, it's not uncommon to see the same kind of joseki time and time again. Hop refreshes the reader by showing new, state-of-the-art joseki that you don't often see in low-dan level games.

If you have no interest in improving your game, and if you don't want to push yourself to learn something new, don't read this book. But if you want to be a high-dan player, Hop's book can take you there. And, you'll have a fun time along the way!

Um, no, these are not Aesops fables.

We purchased this book at a retail store on clearance. After seven stories selected at random (okay, not random--my 4 year old son picked them out based on pictures he saw), we will be donating it to the local used book store for store credit. Here is the sampling:

An octopus was an expert soccer player. He couldn't get on all eight of his shoes in time to play the game. He missed the game

A kid stole his mom's spaceship and went on a joy ride. After she rescued him, she grounded him, but he thought it was totally worth it.

A rigid rule based king had a princess. A slimy monster breaks into the castle and kidnaps the princess. After a prince tries to rescue her, it turns out that the swamp monster is the good guy after all (slovenly habits, home invasion, and kidnapping not withstanding). The princess fell in love and married the monster. The prince consoles himself by riding his horse through mud puddles on the way home.

An timid kitten and an brave kitten both get beat up for different reasons. The end. (Actually, the brave kitten climbed a tree but couldn't get down; the timid kitten took a nap on the ground and was chased by a dog. Each blames the other for their inability to help each other.)

After a kid is too lazy to do his own laundry, he uses a robot to do it. The robot ruins his shirt but cleans the whole house. The mom is angry with him for ruining the shirt but is impressed with the rest of the house. The kid takes credit for the robot's work as if it was his own.

So, if you want to teach your child morals like: how to lie, how to take credit for another's work, that living in filth is cool, hard work doesn't pay, and how to blame others, this is your book. As it stands, we stopped after 7 stories.

Good compilition and artwork

This is a compilation of stories, poems, sayings, songs, etc with wonderful artwork to go with them. I liked that all of the stories were relatively short. Some were only a couple of lines and up to about 4 pages at longest length. What you choose to read can be chosen for many reasons like age of the child, length of the story, what they are currently learning, and how long they can focus. I strongly suggest that you preview each tale PRIOR to reading to your child as some fairytale endings could be upsetting (though I am not aware of any yet in this book.) Many of the stories can be used for teaching moments from science to life choices/morals. The more difficult stories are better suited for older children where they can discuss with you the moral: whether the character in the story did the right thing or not, how might we do things differently, or how characters could have solved their problems. Many of the poems would work for jump rope or patty-cake games. If you take time to research online I am sure you can also find out how to sing some of the songs. The book displays some diversity in that people range in skin and hair tones from very pale to dark and including red hair, white hair, etc. However, I feel that the diversity could have been done better. Not every page has people on it though, but it still would have been nice if all prominent stories were given a different race for the main character. I just want everyone to be equally represented and kids to grow up as "color blind" as possible.

Overall, the fairytale book seems to be the best in the series. However, I am pleased with my purchase and the tales seem very appropriate for boys, BUT be sure to READ EVERY STORY FIRST. That way you can decide for yourself whether the story is appropriate for your child's age and what morals you want to tech them.

Received in horrible condition!

I purchased this book from Amazon while on vacation. The package was not opened for about 6 weeks until I returned home. The book is in horrible condition. Unfortunately, I am outside the window to exchange it for another new copy.

Terrible. Absolutely Terrible!! So Bad, It Ruins the Play...

Poorly edited, poorly translated, poorly organized...Poorly presented...

Nothing good about it, frankly...

Felt lke somebody stole my money when I tried to read this.

Stay away from here...far, far away from here!!!

(And that's good advice--some of the best advice you will ever get!!!)

Not Worthless AND It's Your Only Option

Have LOW expectations, and you won't be disappointed. There is no "No Fear Shakespeare" for Love's Labour's Lost, so if you want something to "translate" Shakespeare for you, this is it. It is extremely basic.
