An Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Project Management

Ugh! All the joy and engagement of reading a dictionary to learn how to write poetry. Bought this for a PM elective in an MBA program and I'm now about half way through. I'm an experienced PM in industry and Government. I'm glad I didn't start with a text like this when considering PM duty. Else, I would have surrendered all enthusiasm (or hanged myself) and headed for job in the shipping department . This is an encyclopedic, monotonous, enumerative narrative with no literary cueues on the importance or significance of topics therein. It all just IS (or WAS). Once in a while there is an assertion from the old caste structure of business sounding like 19th century factory lore. Charts and graphics are so subjective and nondescript I can't fathom what they are intended to add - other than to increase page count. Many are very confusing for their minimalist labeling and severe lack of source data. Perhaps Kerzner was the best PM in recent history. No doubt he was the first to stretch the definition across so many pages to garner title of Bible of project management. But I am rather surprised even in the 11th edition it still feels like a 19th century tome, with so many plodding passive assertions leading inductively to every minute definition you'd swear it was written by Hume or Mill or Shopenhauer. I'm just very disappointed that after reading so many insightful and engaging texts on all the aspects of contemporary project management, I now find myself here in a graduate class with a reference text that doesn't really offer any conviction for what is good or bad, right or wrong, optimal or suboptimal for business today and tomorrow. Rather it examines archaeologically the pot shards and bone fragments in the strata below the current enterprise to estimate at how we arrived in present day.

Uses Wikipedia as a Source

The author uses Wikipedia as a reference. I thought it was a fluke when he used a definition of a process from Wikipedia, but not one page later an entire three paragraphs was taken directly from Wikipedia according to the author, but without any actual online citation reference (link, date accessed, etc.).

This alone warrants the one star. Wikipedia is not reliable source material.

Needs better editing

Terrible for use in the classroom. The problems and case studies don't pull from information in the book. The information, especially in chapter 11, isn't laid out well and is confusing. Kerzner often interchanges terms like project and program management that shouldn't be interchanged. I would not recommend this edition for classroom use.

If you enjoy art or want to enjoy art, this is a must read. Excellent!

Doesn't get better than this. Most books about art are flat, condescending, basically showing off the author's smarts. This book is very accessible to anyone who loves art and for anyone who has an interest ranging from professional to collector to novice. An intriguing take on humanity in art and how we communicate with art and how modern life dictates our understanding. Thoughtful, enlightening, refreshing, beautiful! Well edited, beautiful lay out, keenly developed and a book that is enjoyable to read over and over again. Brings a sense of discovery to the art viewer. Makes me want to head the nearest museum! Would make an excellent gift for anyone, whether for the holidays or as a thank you.

Fresh, but perhaps not fully baked?

I very much enjoyed the first part of de Botton's new book, which he calls "methodology". In this section, he elucidates 7 areas of the human condition commonly addressed in art (suffering, love, etc.). This section reads as a very moving meditation on old ideas brought into very thoughtful new focus.
After this section ends, though, I felt de Botton lost his way a bit. The remainder of the book feels less deeply thought-out, as if maybe he was writing for a looming deadline (which is rather doubtful, given his excellent track record of publishing successful books, and his personal fortune). The book disappointingly veers off into a persuasive essay on how public art should be displayed and considered, and stops being fresh and original.
I was left wanting to re-read the first chapter, and wishing de Botton and his co-author would re-write the remainder. The book is beautifully constructed, and the illustrations are worth the price of the whole thing. It's certainly worth reading, even if it does leave the reader wishing for less political opinion, and more thoughtful discourse on the nature of art and healing.

This book is so different from others I have read. Here, art is not about history, not about technique. It is about the relationship between the viewer and the work. Art - either viewed or practiced - has depths of wisdom and perspective to impart. This is so delicious a book, that I limit my time with it, to make it last. Very interesting. Beautiful artwork.

A Deep and Thoughful Treatise Indeed

Great book, I enjoyed reading it.

An avid follower of astrology for over two decades, I cannot say that I have read a more thorough and comprehensive work in this space. Mr.Singh has presented his research work in Relationship Compatibility Astrology, and I found the content very interesting. This book is very different from the other Relationship Compatibility Astrology books published by astrologers, that I read in the past. They all are using the Zodiac sign Compatibility or Synastry Compatibility. In a day and age when everyone is out to make a fast buck in the name of anything related to astrology, palmistry and so on, full credit to Mr. Singh to have handled this in all seriousness and details. I wish Mr. Singh all the best.

Excellent book to learn relationship compatibility via astrology

I have always been intrigued by astrology and, after reading this book, I can easily look at someone's chart and tell if that person is compatible with me in business or other life matters. I think now I can compare two charts of different people and call myself an astrologer also.
I have read few other books on astrology, and could not understand them well as astrology is very vast. But this book explains in details about the compatibility between people in many paths of life.

I will recommend this book to anyone interested in astrology and wants to quickly find out compatibility between their and another person's horoscope.

Excellent vedic astrology book for students and professionals alike

Gurmeet Singh has the unique ability to blend hindu astrology and krishnamurty paddati (KP system). KP system astrology is based on hindu astrology but deviates little bit to take house cusps into account and uses its own ayanamsha. Mr. Singh is one of the few astrologers in this world who can blend the two and arrive at a conclusion regarding a person's character, inclinations, good and bad periods and relationship challenges. This book is unique to address relationship astrology based on natal chart (birth chart). He gives numerous examples of many famous people with AA birth data rating and shows how to systematically arrive at a finding. Some of his analysis on people such as Scot Peterson, Peter Jennings are accurate. Every natal chart is unique and he guides us to focus on areas in chart (planets, houses and running dasa and bhukti) that show the inherent urge of the person to do what they do. Overall an excellent addition to one's vedic astrologer's library and I highly recommend it to all students of vedic and ky system astrology.
