THE AUTHOR'S POV MADE THE DIFFERENCE

As I read this book, the first book I reviewed soon after I declared myself as being a Book Reviewer “Searching4MrRight.com” by Rene D. Schultz, came into my mind. In that review I wrote “Who can't recall the horrors of the dates you had, many of which you'd sooner forget, before getting married for the first. For the dates you can recall, didn't you give each one of those dates a label of sort to "remember" them by? If you did and you can relate to what Rene had experienced when she decided to re-enter the dating and doing the same thing. Read this book, and see how many of her dates had been similar to ones you had experienced yourself.”

Hopefully by reading “Looking for Mr. Right,” you’ll be able to by-pass some of these experiences and disasters.

I feel this book has been written in an informative as well as an entertaining manner; which added to the enjoyment of my in reading it. The book addresses the issues most women are concerned about when it comes to the “The Dating Game.” The information this book seems to indicate it has been researched quite well, and the exercises it contains are quite useful is realizing what you need to know in order to attract your Mr. Right.

While this is a book which can easily be read in a single sitting of about an hour, you should reduce your reading speed so you won’t miss anything the author has to say, so read it a second time. I’d read this book twice over the course of three hours since I’d received the book, which included a break to have my dinner.

I was about to give this book 4 STARS, but how could I forget this book had been written by a MALE with a MALE’s POV; which is why I’m giving it 5 STARS.

A witty, well-written & spot on glimpse into every woman's psyche, this book is extremely engaging. Everyone who reads it will certainly identify with almost all the points made & explained within these pages. The long-term honest advice on how to better one's true self will facilitate common sense changes within your life & give you the ability & courage to begin a real long-lasting relationship with not just yourself, but someday soon, with your perfect match. Highly recommendable, I hope someday we may read more from this author! Thank you!

Powerful advice for much more than just finding Mr. Right

Pros:
I was skeptical at first: a dating book for women written by a man? This raised all sorts of sexism red flags for me, but I'm so glad I looked past this initial judgment and read the book because I loved it! After finishing it, I felt like I had just been to an incredibly productive therapy session. I personally read it from the angle of how to find meaningful friendships rather than "Mr. Right" and I felt the advice the book had to offer would help improve all of my relationships - romantic or otherwise. I'm excited to start implementing some of the advice and see the positive changes in my life.

Cons:
I wasn't a huge fan of the chapter on taking care of your body. While I agree that this is an important part of self-love, I feel that women are bombarded with this message, and typically in negative ways, so I felt that this chapter was unnecessary and distracted from the really important messages in the book. I also could have done without some of the lines that sounded like scare tactics (if you don't read this book you'll end up alone forever), even though I think they were meant to be humorous.

Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to anybody - male or female, single or happily married - as I think it has some really important messages. Will it help you find Mr. Right? Probably. Will it help you be a happier, more fulfilled person? Definitely.

She settled down in Los Angeles and found a home in the Crips, where she was taken in and befriended by gangsters like the legendary "Monster" Kody Scott. For the first time she found a family, but when Cupcake was blasted in the back with a 12-gauge shotgun, she was once more taken in by the system.

At 16, her stepfather reeneters her life and engineers an "emancipation," in which the courts declare her an adult and free her, finally, from the child welfare system. Cup takes advantage of her new freedom to start a drug-dealing operation with her stepfather, who also manages a stable of colorful prostitutes. Soon she meets a man, falls in love, and gets married. He convinces her to get a real job and learn to speak proper English--but he also abuses her and introduces her to crack cocaine. Cupcake flits from job to job, miraculously, given that she never fails to show up without some cocktail of narcotics floating in her system.

She hits rock bottom when, in desperation, she steals crack from her drug dealer. He beats her nearly to death, rapes her, and then leaves her body behind a dumpster. Cupcake wakes up days later, not sure of how she ended up in this state and from that moment begins to turn her life around. She was adopted by a lawyer who ran the law firm where she "worked," and slowly he assisted her in kicking the habit--with the help of an eccentric group of fellow addicts who became, at last, a family to her--and catching up on her education. With the support of her new family, she eventurally goes all the way to law school (although not without a few additional misadventures along the way) and joins one of the top law firms in the country.

Cupcake's story is an inspiring, at times hilarious, often distrubing, and deeply moving account of a singular woman who took on the worst of contemporary urban life and survived it with wit and a ferocious will. It updates classic memoirs like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and Makes Me Wanna Holler, and gives a bold and gritty spin to contemporary memoirs like Finding Fish. At the center of it, Cupcake is a charming and inspiring narrator through the inferno of her life.

Having made it through to the other side and a stable life, Brown revisits the ugliest places in her past, her matter-of-fact voice refusing to shy away from any of the brutal details. Brown does not milk her story for sympathy (although that is implicit in its very telling); she merely chronicles its twists and turns, its tragic losses and terrible indignities, choosing to honor her past by exposing it in its entirety. Brown's voice is measured and wry, exposing the foibles of her own stunted good sense at the same time as she documents the heinous callousness of the adults who by turns mistreat and neglect her after the untimely death of her mother. Her reading lacks something in emotion and professionalism, but its no-nonsense quality is the mark of an unhurried, self-taught storyteller.

Her salvation comes in an unlikely group of fellow addicts who encourage her to change. Brown takes the same fortitude it took to survive the streets and uses it to become a lawyer. Very Inspiring

It took me a while to get into this book because of the terrible things that Cupcake experienced and the choices she made but it is a very inspiring book that no matter what you have been through, how little you have, you can turn it around if you are determined and put the hard work in. Cup was able to accomplish so much near the end - I kind of wish more emphasis was put onto the amazing things near the end - after struggling to get to where she turns it around I didn't want the book to end because I wanted to hear more of the great things she has done. I have seen too many lives affected by drugs and this gives me hope that more people in situations like this can and do turn it around to become successful and have a rewarding life. My cousin battled with drugs and addiction from a young age and then when approaching 40 he got clean and went back to school. He just graduated at the top of his class and was hired with what I believe is one of his first jobs EVER and is doing fabulous. I am so proud that he made the decision and is doing so well now. He sees what it's like to live life to the fullest and is happier than ever. This book gives you a "good feeling" and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a motivational/inspirational story.

Inspiring, heart breaking, and honest

**SPOILER?? I couldn't write my review without touching on some plot points, but it shouldn't be anything so revealing to ruin the book.

I started reading A Peice of Cake shortly after losing my mom. I was young and it was unexpected, so I was deeply lost. Cupcake's story made me feel emotions in ways that few books can, at a time that I needed to feel more than anything else. The feelings she described surrounding the death of her mother left me sobbing, but grateful to know my own feelings weren't abnormal. There were other things in her book that I (unfortunately) related to as well, and again I would feel better reading her story and feeling less alone in my own thoughts. The way that she described events with such blatant honesty, the magnitude of Cupcake's experiences, the long path of her soberity— its inspiring and moving. Sometimes I would read and just cry. Sometimes they were tears of happiness, sometimes sadness or anger. But above all, her story translated out of the book into my head creating genuine emotions. Few books have done this for me. This is a book that will stick with me for a lifetime.

I really like this book. It's heart-wrenching & angering & I had to take a break from it every now & then but it was awesome to read how she triumphed & overcame! I loved reading about how she pushed through & preseved & how God reached down & saved her. How He blessed her time & time again & surrounded her w/an encouraging group of ppl that wouldn't let her give up! Her relationship with God grew & in Him she found freedom. It's difficult to read what she went through but her testimony is so very worth it!

About the Author

Joseph V. Michalowicz is a consultant with Sotera Defense Solutions. He retired from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory as head of the Sensor and Data Processing Section in the Optical Sciences Division. He has published extensively in the areas of mathematical modeling, probability and statistics, signal detection, multispectral infrared sensors, and category theory. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics with a minor in electrical engineering from the Catholic University of America.

Jonathan M. Nichols is a member of the Maritime Sensing Section in the Optical Sciences Division at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. His research interests include signal and image processing, parameter estimation, and the modeling and analysis of infrared imaging devices. He received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Duke University.

Frank Bucholtz is head of the Advanced Photonics Section at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He has published in the areas of microwave signal processing and microwave photonics, fiber optic sensors, micro-optical devices, nonlinear dynamics and chaos, hyperspectral imaging systems, and information theory. His current research focuses on optical components for digital communications. He received a Ph.D. in physics from Brown University.

The Handbook of Aqueous Electrolyte Thermodynamics solves the modern engineer’s dilemma by acting as a “do-it yourself” guide, with a blueprint for formulating predictive mathematical electrolyte models, recommended tabular values to use in these models, and annotated bibliographies. Engineers confronting the task of solving industrial problems may now solve them by turning to the Handbook and applying the compiled available data and/or the data prediction and analysis techniques presented in this volume to the problem at hand.
Here, the engineer will find a thorough and systematic presentation of electrolyte thermodynamics, beginning with the basic definitions of the equilibrium constants used in formulating electrolyte models and ending with an exposition and comparison of several of the best formulations for the activity coefficients of strong and/or weak electrolytes. In the final chapter there is a general recipe for formulating complete predictive models for electrolytes along with a series of worked illustrative examples.

About the Author
The late Joseph F. Zemaitis, Jr. was President of Chem Solve, Inc. Prior to the formation of Chem Solve, he was Vice-President of OLI Systems, Inc. Dr. Semaitis worked for 9 years at ESSO Research Engineering as Principal Consultant in fluid dynamics and engineering technology. A graduate of Drexel Tech, he received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University. He was a Lecturer in Physics at Drew University and Mathematics at the County College of Morris. Dr. Zemaitis was a member of AICHE, ACS and AAPT.

Diane M. Clark is presently a Senior Scientist at OLI System, Inc. Prior to this she worked for Chem Solve, Inc. She received a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Clarkson College of Technology (now Clarkson University) and is a member of AICHE.

Marshal Rafal is President and founder of OLI Systems, Inc. a world leader in computer software for simulation of aqueous chemistry. Prior to founding OLI in 1971, Dr. Rafal worked at ESSO Mathematics and Systems, Inc. for five years. He received a B.Ch.E. from the Cooper Union and an M.S. Ch.E. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Dr. Rafal is a member of AICHE.

Noel C. Scrivner, as a Senior Consultant at the Du Pont Company, consults on the problems of thermodynamics and kinetics company-wide. His current interest is in the application of electrolyte thermodynamics to geochemistry problems. He received a B.A. and a B.S. from Rice University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Carnegie-Mellon University—all in Chemical Engineering. He is currently chairman of the Design Institute for Physical Property Data (DIPPR) Aqueous Electrolyte Thermodynamic Database project. He is member of AICHE, ACS, Sigma Xi, and American Geophysical Union.

While a plethora of well-written family systems therapy publications exists, finding an engaging text that explicates essential family therapy concepts in less than 150 pages is no easy feat. Dr. Smith-Acuna has done a fabulous job of presenting an overview of the essential modern and postmodern family therapy concepts in a coherent and cohesive fashion.

This is an excellent introduction to the varieties of systems theory and is very well done for its breadth.
