Good easy to read and understand book!

I ordered this book from BOOKS4CHEAP and they never sent it, so I ordered it again with Classicbook and it shipped supper fast. I needed this book for my social welfare class, so I had to rent it or buy it. I am studying to be a social worker, so I thought it would be better to buy the book. I am so happy I did. I love the book; it has a lot of interesting points of views on how the social work life is. I also love the book because it is easy to read and understand; I am not a fan of big and complicated words so this book is perfect for me. Highly recommend it ;)

Received very outdated copy of the book, as such of no use to me in my PhD research

The book I received was a very old version of social work practice and as such is of no use to me. I needed it for my PhD purposes and since the version I have received is very outdated, I cannot make us of it at all. The sad things is this old 1986 book still depicts its Barnes and Noble price of $23.95 and to I had to pay ZAR 492.59 for it.

Just what I needed

This book is required for my social work classes, and is priced a minimum of $20 more in the student store. I ordered it when my classes started and received it before my next class meeting. It was used, but there it was in better condition than the used books at the student store. I am very happy with my purchase.

Some very skilled writing---not all hit the mark, but most have rewards for the careful reader.

This collection of stories requires and rewards careful reading. At the start of every story, I felt quite lost, like I'd been tossing into a situation mid-stream, but usually, by the end, I was glad to have been included in the experience. However, a few stories for me seemed to build up to a conclusion that never quite happened, or if it did, wasn't quite worth the trip. The two stories about comedians, the title story and "Live from the Palladium", fell into that category for me. They felt like elaborate shaggy dog stories.

At the best, these stories have a subtle hint of slipstream to them---the feeling that we are in a world not quite like our own. My favorite two stories were "Frequencies" and "Swarm". "Frequencies" tells of a baby monitor that seems to be delivering a monologue from the baby as an adult, and "Swarm" is about a world where you can pay to access the feelings and happenings of another person's life.

The stories have a very British feel and occasionally language and references that an American reader might not get. Sort of an aside, but I always wonder if there are many nasty, brutal young punks around England as novels and stories always seem to portray. The first story, "Lakelands", certainly has them in spades.

Perhaps the most powerful story in the bunch is "Something Else to Say", about men struggling to connect and share feelings after a tragedy. It's subtle and written with a lot of sympathy, showing how much someone can want to help a friend but not quite be able to.

Overall, this is a solid and well-written story collection.

Profound Understanding of a Father's Influence Is Evident Throughout These Short Stories ...

Ranging in length from 12 to 56 pages, “Your Father Sends His Love” includes twelve of Stuart Evers’ short stories. Each one focuses on some aspect of fatherhood; a father’s influence on a child – whether positive or negative; a father’s love – or lack of it; and the impact it makes on our lives. Written so that the reader feels some connection to the character or recognizes some aspect of their own life set out in the narrative, each story has a quiet power and a huge impact. The psychological nuances and the social mores detailed throughout the book will fascinate readers who value more subtle and cerebral storytelling.

Without providing detailed summaries of each story making up “Your Father Sends His Love”, brief synopses of several of them should whet your appetite for reading the book in its entirety. Lakelands, the first story in the book, describes – both past and present – the experience of Elliot, a gay man and his boyhood, his coming out to his blue-collar father, and his father’s unlikely, unexpected reaction. “…I love you to the ends of the earth …Tell me your news.” “…And he did.” “…To the ends of the earth, son …” In Frequencies, the book’s second offering, a young father who is enamored with his infant son overhears, through the baby monitor, an intercepted exchange between two men. To his chagrin, he learns that no matter how much a parent loves their child, the child, once grown, may have a still negative view of the parent. Farther into the book, Something Else to Say recounts the meeting of two friends in a bar and the difficulty of conversation between them as the result of the death of one of the men’s infant son. Uncomfortable with the situation and in order to expressing his discomfort, the narrator mentally continues to look for mundane, everyday topics of conversation.

Stuart Evers writes using a deep understanding of relationships and of the importance of a father’s love. His treatment of each character is sensitive and allows the reader to recognize and empathize with the individual and their situation. Each story is powerful, yet none “shout” their message. Rather, the reader is permitted form their own opinion of the characters and their interaction rather than the author telling the reader what to feel or think. If you enjoy skilled writing and the quiet strength of individuals dealing with everyday life, I encourage you to read “Your Father Sends His Love”.

Family Dysfunction

The dozen stories in this collection are loosely connected by the idea of family, but most of the families have troubles. The title piece, the longest in the book at 53 pages, features a "television personality," a clown who had his brief try at Hamlet then sank to famous mediocrity as the perpetual host of game shows. All this is background to his failure with his son, who takes to drugs, and eventually concocts a poetic revenge against his father. A father and son who barely speak are featured in another story, "These Are the Days," but this is offset by a rather beautiful relationship between the old man and his granddaughter, who is also having difficulties at home. Another father-son relationship is at the heart of "Lakelands," the opening tale, in which the protagonist remembers his father, a building worker who could never keep a job, but who stood up for him at a particular moment of crisis.

"Wings" is about a young woman who gets a tattoo in memory of her sister who died young, but conceals it from her husband until it makes both her and the reader look at the relationship in a new light. "Sundowners" also turns out to be about a marriage; though it starts out with an adulterous affair, its ultimate purpose is to focus on the woman's role as wife and mother. "Frequencies," which features a young father trying to cope with their baby while his wife is away on business, is one of the more positive stories, though it is diminished by the over-artificial device of having the baby monitor pick up some random radio program which the husband takes as a preview of his son's grown-up commentary on his childhood.

The settings are almost all British, which was an attraction for me. Otherwise, I think I would have been turned off by the generally depressing air sooner than I actually was. Evers is also quite adventurous technically, jumping around in time and delighting in delayed punchlines and oblique hints. I was kept afloat by his sheer skill, but few of these are stories I want to retain in my memory when all is said and done. [3.5 stars, rounded down]

?Gray, a culture historian and author of Blacks in Classical Music, spent four years compiling this bibliography. Some of the 5,953 entries are listed in more than one of the classified sections, which are arranged by such topics as traditional religion, mythology, philosophy, traditional medicine and witchcraft, and geography (regions and countries within Africa and the diaspora). Many of the geographic sections are subdivided by ethnic groups, dieties, and other topics including divination, sacred music, and zombies. Each classified section is subdivided by type of material: books, dissertations, theses, articles in books, journals and newspapers, unpublished papers, and media. More newspaper and popular magazine articles and more films and videos are listed for regions outside Africa; English translations of European-language books are listed for Africa only. Most of the materials cited are written in English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. There are a few titles in Yoruba, but other African languages are excluded.?-Choice

I am a high school biology teacher and thought this would be helpful to my students when they look up vocabulary definitions. Although it is a great resource it is too advanced for high school level. Definitely written at a college level.

Lucia Caycedo Garner is from Colombia. She taught language and pedagogy courses for more than thirty years at the University of Wisconsin, Madison before her retirement. She is the author of IM�GENES, CLARO QUE S�! FUENTES: CONVERSACI�N Y GRAM�TICA, FUENTES: LITERATURA Y REDACCI�N, and EN PAREJAS 1, 2, 3 Y 4. She was an ACTFL OPI tester and trainer. She was a frequent presenter at the local, state, and national levels. She was also a contributor to the University of Wisconsin Spanish Placement Exam.

Debbie Rusch has been the coordinator of Elementary Spanish at Boston College since 1990. She is the author of IM�GENES, CLARO QUE Si!, AN�MATE, FUENTES: CONVERSACI�N Y GRAM�TICA, and EN PAREJAS 1, 2, 3 Y 4. At Boston College she has taught pedagogy courses. She has been an instructor of Spanish for more than 35 years and has also taught English as a Foreign Language in Spain, where she lived for more than six years. She is a frequent presenter at state, regional, and national conferences and conducts workshops for school districts.

Marcela Dominguez is from Argentina. She was also a lecturer and coordinator at Pepperdine University for seven and three years respectively. She also taught at UCLA and USC. Outstanding teaching/learning tool

I used this book (2nd Edition) during university (for two credit courses in Introductory Spanish). It was very easy to follow and logical in its approach to teaching Spanish. I had previously taken French through elementary and high school and subsequently graduated with a limited knowledge of how the language worked and a poor grasp of how to speak it (arguably the most important component these days). I believe that my ability in Spanish is directly related to the composition of this textbook.

Across Orion's Arm

Across Orion's Arm is interesting in two ways - it shows how a man-made wormhole might be used to make interstellar travel possible, and it places humans in the role of 'little green men' who terrorize innocent inhabitants of an alien world. I enjoyed the book and recommend it as food for thought.

This novel provides a credible story about humans using a wormhole to travel to another star system. There's even a romance, plus lots of scientific and technical detail. That author states in the preface that the book isn't 'hard' sci-fi, but it sure reads like it is. The characters are more developed than in a typical sci-fi novel. In summary I found the story to be very entertaining.

Noted Columbia University sociologist Gans (The Urban Villagers) offers a dry but forceful critique of current attitudes and policies toward the poor. First, he probes the rhetoric that stigmatizes the poor as undeserving, showing how the term "underclass" was curiously transformed from Gunnar Myrdal's economic term to a common code word for minorities that ignores the economic sources of their out-of-the mainstream behavior. Though some of the poor threaten society with street crime, Gans argues that we magnify that in comparison with other threats to safety, the economy and our values. Labeling the poor as undeserving has many larger functions, he notes, including supplying jobs for those who control and guard them (e.g., "police, judges, lawyers, court probation officers, guards"). Gans's proposals to combat recidivism with job training and to offer universalistic, race-blind job programs may attract attention, but his recommendation of an income security grant seems out of sync with today's politics, as are his musings about a future economy that shares jobs and flattens incomes. But his proposal that the media and foundations act to debunk stereotypes about the poor, showing "how much their life consists of coping with frequent crises," seems an urgent prerequisite to any policy change.

Gans, Columbia University professor, author of such classic sociological studies as The Levittowners and The Urban Villagers (both 1982), makes his contribution to work on "the language of poverty" (See Michael Katz's Improving Poor People ) with this brief, meaty book. He traces the history of stigmatizing the poor, probes the roots of "the underclass" and other labels, explores why so many nonpoor Americans find those labels convincing, and proposes elements of a thoughtful antipoverty policy. The people we label "the underclass" are perceived by more fortunate citizens as a threat--partly real, but also imagined, exaggerated, and displaced. In addition, poor people serve various functions for the larger society: among them, economic, political, normative, microsocial and, most important, macrosocial roles--specifically, passing the stigma of "undeservingness" to future generations and ensuring that the poor will remain excluded from the labor market. Jobs are central to his policy prescriptions, but Gans holds that, after the turn of the century, absent government action, middle-class Americans will have as much trouble finding and keeping decently paid full-time jobs as the very poor today, so our ideology and policies must change soon. Terrific Book Connecting The Underclass With Public Policy!

Professor Herbert Gans is an esteemed and reputable sociologist who first gained prominence with his absorbing study of the effect of urban renewal in the metropolitan Boston area for ethnic Americans in "The Urban Villagers" in the early 1960s, and also for his interesting description of the rise of suburbia in "The Levittowners". In the decades since Gans, now a professor at Columbia University, has gained a reputation as a careful, deliberate and thorough sociological investigator in a number of other notable studies and articles. With this recent book he now explores the nature of the connections between the rise of the permanent underclass as an entity in late 20th century American society and the kinds of federal, state, and local public policy that have facilitated the rise of the underclass and led to its establishment as a permanent feature of contemporary society.
Thus, although this book is fairly brief, it is extremely well written and contain a virtual cornucopia of vital facts related to the nature of the human beings that comprise the underclass as well as how public policy feeds into the nature of the social, economic and political dilemma the members of the impoverished lower reaches of our society are afflicted with. Regardless of the professional tone to the language Professor Gans so skillfully employs, the reader can immediately sense the degree of empathy and compassion this bespectacled and now elderly academic holds for the human beings he is writing about. While tracing the history of the poor in this country, he illustrates how they have come to be stigmatized and blamed for their situation, a clear case of what fellow academic William Ryan described in detail in the now classic book, "Blaming The Victim". Indeed, many more affluent Americans find such labels convincing, and by not recognizing that such ignorance makes for public policy that turns such self-serving nonsense into a self-fulfilling reality, have contributed to the staggering dimensions of the social problem.
In what is easily the most frightening portion of the book, Gans shows how the existence of the underclass serves the more affluent sectors of the society, in a multitude of ways not only facilitating the passing on of social myths that continue to afflict the poor but also passing on the degree to which the rest of us seem to be collectively deaf, dumb, and blind to the consequences of such a labeling process. Poor people have their social functions, and many of these serve the interests of the more affluent while at the same time exacerbating the problems of the poor. In this respect, more enlightened public policy can serve to ameliorate these wrongs and aid individual human beings caught in the grinding grip of ignorance and poverty.
Not surprisingly, Gans focuses on the critical importance of providing jobs to help such individuals rise to more full participation in the society, and warns that without such active governmental intervention, the problems now afflicting the lower reaches of society may find their way into a much wider sector of society, and that many middle Americans may find themselves slipping as they strive to maintain their place in a rapidly changing social, economic, and political environment. What we now bravely call a technological revolution was once referred to in less glowing terms as 'automation', and at that time it was better understood by the average working person to have many more negative connotations for them in terms of their ability to gain and keep themselves employed than seems to be true in today's hyped-up world of media bally-hoo. Gans is warning us of more stressful times to come, and asks us to reconsider our priorities to become more fully human. As John Kennedy once said, if we cannot save the millions who are less fortunate, then surely there is little hope for the few who are rich. Perhaps it is in our own interests as citizens and as human beings to begin to behave more responsibly.
