The characteristics of Bishop Ryle's method and style are obvious. He is pre-eminently and always scriptural and expository. He never starts with a theory into which he tries to fit various scriptures. He always starts with the Word and expounds it. It is exposition at its very best and highest. It is always clear and logical and invariably leads to a clear enunciation of doctrine. It is strong and virile and entirely free from the sentimentality that is often described as "devotional."

Ryle, like his great masters, has no easy way to holiness to offer us, and no "patent" method by which it can be attained; but he invariably produces that "hunger and thirst after righteousness" which is the only indispensable condition to being "filled."

May this book be widely read, that God's name be increasingly honoured and glorified.

Great book

A truly excellent book for those seeking to understand the 'meat' of Christian life. This book is not for the curious, it requires both a great deal of contemplation as it's precepts are for the mature, seasoned Christian. But, that said, he outlines what it means to walk in holiness- a VITAL issue in today's compromised church. If you want to be encouraged, challenged and are willing to get to your knees after reading a few paragraphs, then by all means dive in!! Well worth the price!!

Brooks devotes individual chapters to the themes of freedom and order, national identity, science and superstition, and success, contrastng them to those of similar works from Europe and the United States. Wisconsin's Past and Present

If only every state had this kind of historical atlas to put its society, economy, and all other aspects of its past into historical perspective. The map selection is detailed and thorough, the map drawings are crisp and presetable. The text fully supports the maps. The book covers settlement, origianl native tribes, the economic growth, the development of counties, it even covers which NFL football teams either have in the past or are presently training in Wisconsin. It covers the little known milk strikes (little known outside of Wisconsin) of 1933.

I was a bit skeptical at first because every volume I found in bookstores had a plastic wrap around the book making it impossible to review its contents before I purchased it. The price was also a bit steep. But Amazon was about $15 less than bookstores so I figured I'd take the chance and purchase it. I was not disappointed. Again, all states should have dedicated cartographers who want to explain their state's history in maps. It may not be the end all books on Wisconsin's history, but by reading this book one comes away with a feel for what the Wisconsin experience was all about. I highly recommend this book.

Not an accurate book from a Luxembourger's point of view

While I appreciate many sections of the book, the authors make the age-old mistake of equating Luxembourger immigrants with Germans or Germanic-speaking peoples. That's like equating the Finns with Russians by virtue of geographic location. It just is not accurate. Luxembourgers settled in Ozaukee County as early as 1845 or so. They did not then and still do not today equate themselves with being German in any manner or form! In fact, many immigrants from the Palatinate, Hesse, the Trier area, etc., considered themselves to be more like Luxembourgers in identity.
Luxembourgers have a unique, rich history all of their own and it is constantly overlooked by those not versed in Luxembourg history or immigration. As a student of Wisconsin's natural and human history all my life, this book is a Godsend for its fine graphics and outstanding presentation of historical minutiae. I particularly appreciate its statewide focus that avoids Madisonian or Milwaukeean parochialism. "One must caress the details, the divine details" - The authors have done this in this obvious labor of love. Probably one of the top five books ever written on the geography and history of Wisconsin.

Crucible is a hard book for me to rate. I'm not the biggest fan of Troy Denning's Star Wars books. There's a lot to this book that I didn't like. However, there is a great payoff at the end so I definitely recommend reading it. I will try to keep this review spoiler-free, but with the recognition that I can't properly explain exactly what I liked about the book without at least mentioning the ending.

THE PLOT

At first glance, it's not very interesting. A pair of businessmen, the Columi brothers Marvid and Craitheus Qreph, have an evil plan to take over the galaxy. And unfortunately the actual plot itself never becomes very interesting. Crucible is really about the journey Han, Luke, and Leia take (especially Han). We see a few other characters, including Ben Skywalker, Tahiri, and Vestara Khai, but they're really ancillary.

TROPES

I've been critical of tropes in Star Wars writing for a while and Denning is one of the leading culprits. My Trope Rader went on high alert right on page one, when Crucible opens with a scene in a bar and we learn it reminds Han of that bar in Mos Eisley. The first half is filled with more tropes, including a high-stakes Sabacc game in order to obtain information about the villain, a big bar fight that descends into chaos, etc.

I was pleased that the second half of the book steers away from the common tropes and actually has some original and even interesting elements. We do see another Sabacc game, but unlike any other ever played. Denning also introduces some hard-sci-fi concepts into the book, although he doesn't develop these as much as I would have liked. Finally, the ending is just literally and figuratively out of this world. While I don't think Crucible ever manages to become a great book, I appreciate Denning's willingness to attempt to push the boundaries.

THE BIG THREE

Crucible has been promoted as a final outing for the Big Three (Han, Luke, and Leia). I think it actually works in this regard. I wouldn't be too sad if this were the last book starring Han, Luke, and Leia.

One thing I really appreciated is that Denning actually shows Han, Luke, and Leia aging. We know the characters are in their sixties or even seventies, but up until now we've never actually seen any sign that they're any older than twenty. I personally hated the approach of previous Star Wars books, that "sixty is the new forty." It made the characters stale. If the characters' age were frozen, so too was their character development. We never had to see them struggle with age.

Denning seems to have abandoned this approach. At first I thought Denning was hitting readers over the head a bit too much with the theme of aging, emphasizing the characters' age, wrinkles, etc. However, once it becomes clear that Crucible is at its heart a story about heroes getting old and finding their emotional core, I decided that the emphasis on aging made sense.

Denning is still careful to show that Han, Luke, and Leia are heroes and can still fight, but he also shows that they're old and aren't the same characters they were even 10-20 years ago. Han, Luke, and Leia in this book feel pain, both physical and emotional. They get injured and sometimes they heal, sometimes they don't. The injuries have consequences. If anything, there were a few moments where I thought Denning should have explored the emotional impact a bit more. There are a few events midway through the book that I thought probably should have had larger repercussions on the characters. Fortunately, as I discuss below, Denning really hits this theme out of the part with the ending.

THE VILLAIN

As readers of my reviews know, I think having a good villain in a Star Wars novel is at least as important as having an original plot. Unfortunately, this is where Crucible falls flat. The villains are two businessmen, Marvid and Craitheus Qreph. The brothers are Columi, an alien species that resembles the aliens from many alien abduction stories, with huge heads and tiny bodies. I don't mind that the aliens look absolutely ridiculous and that the Columi anatomy is probably biologically impossible. What does bother me is that I can't respect them as villains.

Denning wants us to view the Qreph brothers as hyperintelligent. Denning has the characters mention that the Columi are known for their intelligence and that the Qrephs always seem like they're several steps ahead. However, we never actually see the Qrephs acting intelligent. They seem very easily tricked and manipulated. They don't even win any major victories n the book. Having spies and Mandalorian goons doesn't make a villain intelligent or special.

Compare this to Thrawn, the model for the hyperintelligent Star Wars villain. In Timothy Zahn's books, we see Thrawn using logic and intuition to deduce the New Republic's strategy. We see him using his brain. Not every villain has to be intelligent. However, the Columi resembled the bumbling Nemoidians in The Phantom Menace far more than they did Thrawn. That's not an insult as I thought the Nemoidians worked well in that movie. Unfortunately, by trying to tell rather than show us that the Columi were intelligent, Denning only emphasized how pathetic the villains really were.

OTHER CHARACTERS

As I said above, Crucible is about the journey of Han, Luke, and Leia. The other characters fade into the background. Sadly, Denning doesn't seem to take as much care writing them. We see them either behave out of character or become one-dimensional caricatures of their former selves. For example, in the beginning of the book, Lando is in a tense negotiation with the Qrephs, who have already threatened him. Lando then lets slip the name of his son, "Chance," but the Qrephs apparently did not understand the reference. Lando then proceeds to tell them that "Chance" is the name of his son. So, Lando, a professional gambler, intentionally gives his enemy leverage and puts his family in danger! Tahiri Veila meanwhile seems to serve merely as Ben's copilot. We see nothing about her that makes her Tahiri (and there's not a single reference to her walking barefoot). Vestara Khai, one of the few good things to come out of the Fate of the Jedi series, is just, well, there. Finally, Jaina Solo fans will be disappointed, as she plays almost no role in the book. In short, Han, Luke, and Leia become more interesting in this book, but it seems like all of the other characters were simply thrown in to support their journey and not as real characters in their own rights.

THE PAYOFF

If I had only read the first three-quarters of Crucible, I probably would have given it 2.5 stars out of 5. Denning isn't known for his ability to conclude stories so I didn't have much hope for the final quarter. However, Denning really does a great job bringing the emotional journey of Han, Luke, and Leia to a conclusion. I'll try not to reveal spoilers but will try to give readers a taste of why they should suffer through the first parts of the book and actually finish it.

One of Denning's strengths as a writer is his ability to explore the nature of the Force and see the "mystical energy field that binds all living things" in a whole new way. The finale of Crucible took this to a whole new level. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that in Crucible we see some of the repercussions from the confrontation with Abeloth from the Fate of the Jedi series and the Clone Wars Mortis Trilogy (so be sure to rewatch those!). I appreciate that Denning does all this without diminishing the mystical nature and wonder of the Force (unlike, say, midi-chlorians). Denning emphasizes this effect by adopting a more abstract writing style, depicting scenes in an almost impressionist style. It's a neat effect and definitely new for Star Wars.

I was also happy with the journey the characters took, particularly Han. While I criticized Denning for not focusing enough on emotional development during the first parts of the book, the ending partly makes up for it. In particular, Denning brings a sort of tenderness to some of the characters that I didn't expect. Obviously with the upcoming Sequel Trilogy movies this won't be the last we see of Han, Luke, and Leia, but Crucible does do a better job than I thought it would of providing closure.

CONCLUSION

There were parts of Crucible that I hated and parts that I loved. The book probably benefitted from my low expectations. I can't say I love the book. Parts of it really were disappointing. It seems like Denning had many ideas he wanted to explore in the book but didn't know how to make it all work. There are a lot of unfinished plot themes and things that seem like they should have had a greater impact on the story or characters, but didn't. However, as I said above, it is worth reading this book because it does lead to an interesting conclusion, albeit this probably isn't the way most fans would want the story of the Big Three to end.

Overall: 2.5 out of 5 stars.

The Big Three Explore the Nature of the Force

Luke, Leia and Han are the main featured players in this installment of the Star Wars saga, with Lando Calrissian playing a slight supporting role. We start in a cantina and end up fighting our way out, but apart from the familiar action the lesson we really learn is that Han and Leia still have it but are getting older. This book has been promoted as the final outing for the Three. I'm not sure if that means we've gone as far down the timeline as we're going to go, (allowing for more Big Three books to be issued about earlier adventures),or if there really won't be any more books, set anywhere in time, featuring Han, Leia and Luke. Either way, if this is their swan song, it is quite satisfying, if not a jaw dropping blockbuster.

The villains are pretty lame and the villainy is of a corporate/economic sort, until we get to the end of the book. Then we get the "monolith" and focus on the Force and some free wheeling mysticism. That's actually pretty interesting and is an interesting change from some of the purely action oriented books.

The book works as a standalone so it's a nice pickup for a casual reader. The treatment of the three main characters is consistent with what you might remember from the movies, so it has a comfortable and recognizable feel. I'm not deeply conversant with the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and I was just happy to enjoy a solid read with some old acquaintances.

Stanford MBA and entrepreneur tries to create a better world

Chip Conley has a bold vision - he wants to use his company as an instrument to make the world a better place. Rarely have I heard a businessman state his vision so boldly and this alone deserves a cheer.

Joie de Vivre - a lot of persons will learn to pronounce this soon! - is a boutique hotel chain and each property is unique. I have stayed at two and I can testify that the servce is outstanding. If ever you find yourself in San Francisco stay at the Miyako in the heart of Japantown. The faux ricepaper screens and artwork will make you feel as if you are in Japan and the deep granite soak tub and private sauna in the suite will round out the feeling.

Chip draws heavily from the work of Abraham Maslow in running his business. Maslow, as any MBA will tell you, is the guy who came up with the notion of the "hierarchy of needs" which postulates that all humans have basic needs for things like food and shelter and, as these are satisfied, higher order needs like belonging and esteem open up. At the top is "self-actualization" which is a need to realize one's full potential. What I did not know till I read this book is that Maslow had spent a lot of time pondering the implications of his theory for business and had actually recorded his thoughts in books many of which are now out of print. I will now scour the Internet for these.

Chip's genius is that he came up with an organized and disciplined method of applying these principles to his operations. The book is basically divided into three parts - one dealing with employees, one with customers and the final one with investors. For each of these, he offers tips on how to meet their lower order needs and then lead the way to them fulfilling their higher order needs and seeing that they are doing so.

He walks his talk. For example, during the double whammy of the dot.com meltdown and the 9/11 induced travel recession the hotel industry in California fell off a cliff. Conley took no salary for more than three years maxing out his credit cards to live and persuaded his senior executives to take 10% pay cuts. In his own words "...you make the right choice and acknowledge that yur lowest-paid employees deserve the greatest support during the most difficult times." What a contrast from the typical approach of firing dozens of the rank and file while preserving top-management perks!

Half of Joie de Vivre's employees clean toilets and make beds, but Chip has them feeling valued and and instituted recognition programs that move them up Maslow's hierarchy. For example, even chambermaids get to stay free for a couple of nights at any of the chain hotel so they can experience the service as a customer. I want to make an important point here and this I got from personal conversations with him. He doesn't just make employess FEEL valued. He DOES value them and looks out for what he can do to make their lives more meaningful. In fact his life's meaning derives from success in doing so. So there are things like sabbaticals for employess and many other perks that you willfind out about when you read the book.

Customers are easy to fit in to the hierarchy. A lot has been written about how to deliver great customer service and Chip does his bit with things like clearly communicating what each of his hotels stands for. He trains all his employees - particularly porters, desk clerks and others who interact with guests - to lookout for ways in which to delight customers. Thus, for example, a guest celebrating a birthday will receive a cake or special gift. Good section with lots of examples from other companies, but nothing stand-out here.

Investors are another story. I have never heard it explicitly mentioned that entrepreneurs should satisfy investors basic need - for return on investment and safety of principal for instance - and then move them higher up the scale as well. But Chip does this in various ways from only selecting investors who are aligned with his own values to drawing them into his vision for what each property is and can be. He describes a process where every consittuency, including investors, provides ideas about how to uniquely position each prospective hotel.

Conley totally disagrees with conventional wisdom that states 1) Money is the primary motivator for employees. He demonstrates that they come alive when you address thier higher order needs. 2) Customers stay loyal when they are satisfied. Satisfied customers are the minimum level to stay in business. You have to continually earn their loyalty by delighting them. and 3) Investors are exclusively focused on financial returns. This is important, but they will cut you a lot of slack if you keep them informed and make them feel as if they are in a cause that they believe in.

So, read this book and become an entrepreneur and do likewise. And please, pretty please with sugar and cream, let me buy some your stock BEFORE you go public.

Book About The Heart and Soul of a Great Leader & Great Company ... A "Must Read"

PEAK is one of my all time favorite business books. I will never be able to do it justice in this short review. PEAK is definitely a "must read" for every executive, CEO and business owner for whom "being ordinary is not an option."

Over the past 22 years, I have worked with many successful companies and leaders. Yet from the first pages of reading this book, I knew that Joie De Vivre (JDV) and Chip Conley (the CEO and author) are a rare breed in today's business world, integrating money with meaning, doing with becoming, success with significance. Here are my reasons why I love this book.

In my experience, there are few companies that go beyond meeting the basic needs of their employees, customers and investors. Only a handful of companies committed to honoring the full hierarchy of employee, customer and investor needs as the foundation to their own profitability, success and legacy. JDV and Chip Conley clearly walk their talk in that regard and are amongst that small minority.

PEAK is multi-fasceted. I felt like I was reading 3 books in one -- a personal narrative/story, a "teaching" manual and a "how to" roadmap -- packed with wisdom, inspiration, provocative ideas and action steps. The book grabbed my attention right away as the author shared his "hero's journey." A story about how JDV, a fast rising star in the '90's, plummeted into a downward spiral with the dotcom industry crash and then hit with an additional catastrophic jolt with 9/11. Tough times like these test a true leader's courage, tenacity, values and substance ... and his/her willingness to heed "the call" to embark on the hero's journey. As the saying goes, "when the student is ready, the teacher appears." It was in those trying moments and through synchronistic events that the author fell upon, via a book, his life and leadership mentor, Abraham Maslow. A mentor whose human motivation principles became the cornerstone of one the most successful hospitality companies in the world. A hero's journey is never complete without transformation and growth, and a "coming home." To me PEAK represents that "coming full circle" where the author shares his experience and wisdom gained during the past 10+ years ago.

PEAK is also a "teaching" manual. It opened my eyes to the power of Maslow's hierarchy in leadership, organizational development, marketing and investor relations ... and ultimately the profitability and legacy of a company. Below are some of my favorite gems from the book:

* The difference between "transactional" vs. "transformational" leadership
* Corporate transformation can only follow personal transformation
* The difference between a job vs. a career vs. a calling
* How JDV creates both meaning "at" work and meaning "in" work with their employees
* How JDV helps employees reach the top level of the hierarchy (meaning/fulfillment) by "becoming heroes participating in the profitability in a heroic enterprise"
* JDV's use of "dreaming sessions" with key customers
* Strategies for addressing unrecognized customer needs to create loyalty
* How to create strong investor relations that go beyond a healthy ROI and are built on trust, partnership and a common higher mission
* JDV's "heart" as the symbol of their corporate culture
* The "service profit chain" -- ie., how JDV's happy employees make happy customers make a healthy profit, and thus, happy investors.
* My favorite part of the book: the final graphic integrating the employee, customer and investor pyramids inside one big pyramid with JDV's "heart symbol" in the middle. A picture truly is worth a 1000 words.

Finally, PEAK is also a "how to" book. I love when an author pulls together at the end of each chapter the main principles and gives me (the reader) "prescriptives" how to apply Maslow's hierarchy to myself and my own business. I've already started applying a couple of Chip Conley's provocative, mind expanding prescriptives to my business - such as, applying the 4 themes that help my customers reach their own peak experience - and find every one of them worth their weight in gold.

While PEAK was my first introduction to applying Maslow's hierarchy in business, I do use Clare Graves Values System Hierarchy (who was Maslow's peer) in my corporate client work. Graves' hierarchy reflects levels of consciousness and assesses to what level an individual, an organization or even a country has evolved at any given time. There is definitely cross synergies between the 2 hierarchies. One of the big differences is that Grave's model is open-ended with no limit on how far one can evolved. According to Clare Graves, only a fraction of 1% have reached his "level 8" - the "holistic self." I sense from reading the book PEAK that Chip Conley and JDV are one of the rare few who have reached that level.

PEAK is more than just a business book. It provides an important message about how to live fulfilling, harmonious, joyful lives. If the principles of PEAK were to be applied by every CEO, executive and business owners, there is no doubt this world would be a much better place.

How to bring the best out in people

You don't have to have an emotional bone in your body to find useful advice in this book. Chip Conley built a great company and weathered the dot.com meltdown by putting people first, both his employees and his customers. Sounds tough, especially for left-brainers, but the Maslow pyramid gives a framework that even the most rational mind can work with. Treat employees fairly, recognize their accomplishments and give them something to believe in. It's as simple as that.

Conley has good advice for pleasing customers and investors, too, but I found his technique for bringing the best out of your employees most useful. Despite the fact that most of his employees don't have college degrees and half don't speak English as their first language, he's managed to both keep them and keep them happy. Those same techniques can work for any company. The point is that people are people everywhere and Maslow brilliantly realized what motivates all of us. Conley maps this to today's business environment with great examples and explanations.

Simply put, this book will make you a better manager. Get it!

In with a bang, out with a whimper

Cthulhu Tales Omnibus collects several of the first issues of Cthulhu Tales into one big volume (I think the other Cthulhu Tales non-omnibus volumes only have 2 or 3 issues).

The three stars is for the art and creativity. It's a lot of fun to experience Cthulhu in a variety of different settings, from the ultra serious to tongue in cheek, like an elementary school rendition of the King in Yellow.

What kills me, however, is that without fail, every single one of these stories begins with a bang, and trickles off with a whimper. Literally, every single story sets up this great premise, and then fizzles out into a non-ending. OK, sure, LOTS of Lovecraft end with a character simply going mad, but most of the time, it's a final revelation that sends the narrator over the edge. Here, it's like the author was writing the story, realized he only had one page left, and then simply ended it with a two or three panel quick fix. It really sucks, because ANY attempt to come up with a proper ending would be extremely welcome - there are a few that come close, but barely.

Anyway, I'm not one of these purists complaining about a lack of Lovecraft style - I love delving into all worlds Cthulhu, humorous or morose. BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to write future stories with actual endings!!!
