About the Author

Charles S. Carver and Michael F. Scheier met in graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin, where they both earned Ph.D. degrees in personality psychology. After graduation, they took jobs at the University of Miami and Carnegie Mellon University, respectively, where they have remained throughout their careers. They’ve collaborated for over three and a half decades in work that spans personality, social, motivational, clinical, and health psychology. In 1998, they received awards for Outstanding Scientific Contribution (Senior Level) from the Division of Health Psychology of the American Psychological Association. In 2007, they received the Donald T. Campbell Award for Distinguished Contributions to Social Psychology from APA’s Division of Personality and Social Psychology. Mike was the 2003—2004 President of APA’s Division of Health Psychology and currently serves as Department Head at CMU. Along with seven editions of Perspectives on Personality, the authors have published two books on self-regulation (the more recent titled On the Self-Regulation of Behavior, in 1998) and over 310 articles and chapters. Mike is an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman. Chuck keeps intending to take up painting but getting distracted by things that need fixing.

Very Vague

Im currently taking Personality Psychology. While this book is good it could have been written in a more concise and direct way for students. The first test i took i noticed the difficulty with actually grasping the concepts. Being that most psychology courses are a repeat of information and different perspectives and scientific explanations of theories, I felt the authors could have been a bit more direct and to the point. In my opinion they took a very conversational position rather than a textbook application of the scientific data collected overtime. Im used to a textbook giving more vocabulary and to the point explanations of the theories. Although I could deduce the meanings of the major theories that have stood the test of time through multiple replications of the data collected, it is likely because I already have a basis for the information from other Psychology courses and textbooks.

BLACK & WHITE ONLY!

This was a black and white version of the textbook. I understand that some of the regulations for international editions are different, but the seller never mentioned that the book was in B&W. The graphs were virtually useless since you couldn't differentiate anything. I would not have purchased the book had I known that it was printed in b&w, a detail that seemed intentionally omitted. I gave it a star because Amazon requires some star system: if I could, I would not have given it any stars.

great images, light on info

The dissections are done very well and the photographs are excellent in illustrating the complexities of details and relationships. While there is a ton of information in the actual photographs, very little is labelled. So unless you are already familiar with what is shown, it is hard to learn much from the cards themselves. I would still reccomend them because I have not seen other cards with actual cadaver photos. And the photos are very well done. They are great for clarifying information learned from other sources. But they would be a phenomenal resource with more labelling and explanatory text.

While this book does include everything it advertises: makeup looks, hair dos, nail art, and explanation of what certain tools are for, the techniques taught are the very basic of them. This book is for the very beginners who are getting in makeup and hair. Everything on the book is something that you can find a video for in youtube, without having to read the book. However, it is well organized and easy to understand, so if you are a beginner it is a good choice for you. This is a great beauty how to book. As a fan of Lauren's and an avid blog reader, I was happy to finally get this book. She really seems to go over all the basis of beauty, and what can be defined as making you feel better about yourself. Eating properly and taking care of your skin. But what really makes it interesting is how she tips out how to apply makeup. Covering those pesky spots. How to take care of your hair and nails. She is also willing to show off some mistakes she had made at an early age with beauty. If you're looking for a book to help you get better with all of those things, this is the one for you.

Terrific Trilogy

Well, I have just finished the last book in the trilogy. Started with The Irish Cottage because of the title, since I have been searching for Irish location plots since our visit to that beautiful country. By the end of the book, I was completely satisfied with the characters, descriptions and various twists to the plot. Of course, I was going to go for the next book, The London Flat, and was, again, not disappointed. Now I have read the last book, The Paris Apartment, and I have added another name to my list of favorite authors such as Nora Roberts and Sheila Connolly. Juliet Gauvin's style holds your interest while giving delicious descriptions of the different locales.

I enjoyed this continuation of The Cottage and was waiting with anticipation for it to be released. It did not disappoint. The author was able to weave into the story another gorgeous and lovable man for the heroine without causing the reader to truly dislike one man or the other. I believe that this is important as the reader does not become anxiety ridden but instead extremely interested in the outcome as it could go several different ways. A very talented author.

Evolutionary Theory and Literary History

In the striking final chapter of this book, and further developed in several essays since, Franco Moretti proposes a theory of literary evolution inspired by Charles Darwin. As is well known, Darwin's theory of `natural selection' has two key components: first, it postulates that change is random, more prone to failure than to success, and not the unfolding of a teleological process progressing towards some final form of perfection (humans are not more perfect than the humanoids they evolved from); second, it postulates that only those changes which give the creature a reproductive advantage in a given set of external conditions survive (survival of the fittest means survival of the fastest reproducer). Adapting this to the needs of literary history, Moretti renders `natural selection' as follows: (1) aesthetic variation is the product of chance; and (2) the literary marketplace determines which formal variations survive. In later works, Moretti brings in `world-systems' theory to account for the peculiarities of the market, thus departing from his initial quite strict focus on Darwin, but nevertheless maintains the original evolutionary model conceived here. The other striking piece in this work is the essay on Dracula and Frankenstein -- Moretti argues quite brilliantly that these novels reflect two different perspectives on apital -- that of owners and that of employers.
