Clear, practical, and affordable
By Eric H. Roth
What should every ESL student know?

Beats me. One size fits all philosophies often seem a bit strange to me. Can anybody really answer this question for every international student and ESL college student? Really? Don't circumstances, needs, and desires differ?

On the other hand, administrators, teachers, future college students, and current international ESL students constantly face this common question. What should every ESL student know?

Fortunately, braver and more confident souls feel comfortable answering this reasonable question. That's why a small green and purple book, What Every ESL Student Should Know: A Guide to College and University Academic Success, caught my eyes at a recent English teachers' conference in California. Kathy Ochoa Flores, the author, has both more confidence and deeper insight into this essential, yet puzzling, question. In 119 pages, she displays considerable wit while dispensing practical advice to international students and immigrants preparing for college.

"My students always want to know what they should do to learn English," notes Flores in chapter 2. "I tell them to marry an American - one who is a native speaker and rich. That way, they can have someone to practice with every day, and they won't have to worry about working and studying at the same time. Unfortunately, this advice does not work for most of my students."

So Flores goes on to advocate, since many students are already married or too young to get married, to at least make some American friends. In bold print, she argues: "Native English speakers are everywhere. Use them. They are like free tutors." How? Take the bus, sit down next to some nice looking American, and start talking. Seek out the elderly since they tend to have both more free time and might be lonely. Talk to children, meet a school counselor, and ask many questions. "Talk to the telemarketers who call you during dinner time, and ask them lots of questions about their products." I completely agree.

This affordable book provides dozens of these imperative statements followed by detailed advice. Written in a clear manner, the concise format and friendly style make this book a wonderful book for newcomers. Easier to read, smaller in scope, and less than controversial than the popular book What's Up, America?, this book serves a slightly different purpose. Both titles help international students adjust to American college campuses, but What Every ESL Student Should Know focuses more on survival skills. International counselors, orientation coordinators, and even English language schools could provide a real service to their students by including this thin book in their orientation sessions and pre-college materials. The minimum cost will pay for itself by reducing ESL student stress.

Meanwhile, future international students should find it and buy it. This "one size fits all" work offers enough tips to satisfy any ESL student - and even a sceptical ESL university teacher!

But Is It Art?: An Introduction to Art Theory, by Cynthia Freeland

From Andy Warhol's Brillo boxes to provocative dung-splattered madonnas, in today's art world many strange, even shocking, things are put on display. This often leads exasperated viewers to exclaim--is this really art?

In this invaluable primer on aesthetics, Freeland explains why innovation and controversy are so highly valued in art, weaving together philosophy and art theory with many engrossing examples. Writing clearly and perceptively, she explores the cultural meanings of art in different contexts, and highlights the continuities of tradition that stretch from modern, often sensational, works back to the ancient halls of the Parthenon, to the medieval cathedral of Chartres, and to African nkisi nkondi fetish statues. She explores the difficulties of interpretation, examines recent scientific research into the ways the brain perceives art, and looks to the still-emerging worlds of art on the web, video art, art museum CD-ROMS, and much more. In addition, Freeland guides us through the various theorists of art, from Aristotle and Kant to Baudrillard. Lastly, throughout this nuanced account of theories, artists, and works, Freeland provides us with a rich understanding of how cultural significance is captured in a physical medium, and why challenging our perceptions is, and always has been, central to the whole endeavor.

It is instructive to recall that Henri Matisse himself was originally derided as a "wild beast." To horrified critics, his bold colors and distorted forms were outrageous. A century later, what was once shocking is now considered beautiful. And that, writes Freeland, is art.

From Publishers Weekly
A survey of everything from aesthetic theory to digital imaging, and of everyone from Goya to Damien Hirst, is packed into seven fast-break chapters here. Freeland (The Naked and the Undead), a philosophy professor at the University of Houston, is familiar enough with the impenetrable artspeak and rhetoric surrounding such issues as identity politics, censorship and public funding not to be intimidated by them; her cut-to-the-chase approach to such critical minefields as the use of bodily fluids in art produces clear and often pungent analyses. Chapters on gender, money and the marketplace, and on the uses and abuses of "primitive" motifs in contemporary art making are models of judicious clarity. And the chapters on the science of perception and the digital revolution display Freeland's equal ease with the vocabularies of scientific research. She can also be tart in her thumb-nail assessments of works (some shown in eight color and 24 b&w plates): '80s painter and filmmaker David Salle "relies on numbingly familiar imagery"; the sainted political artist Hans Haacke is "preachy and boring." But her interest is at all times on explicating issues rather than on rendering facile judgments. If the book suffers from trying to do too much in too small a space, its ambition and usefulness amply justify Freeland's project on its own terms.

Clear and enjoyable explaination of what makes it 'art'.
By Terri
Is there a more confusing or controversial area of understanding in today's society than determining whether a piece of work is 'art' or 'trash'. This book gives a scholarly, yet eminently readable and enjoyable description of how the question, 'but is it art', can be approached and understood. Beginning with Neanderthal renderings and ending in the digital arena - the changing creative environments and philosophical drivers are explained clearly and compellingly. The authors appropriately timed use of wit keeps one happily reading in an area that could easily get dry and intellectually elitist. I now finally feel that I have some tools to evaluate 'art' for myself.

Simplistic Introduction
By ljm3764
The author has tacked an immense subject and skims the surface by discussing some of the many different theories of art. Her desire to keep the discussion straightforward and brief results in sometimes heavy-handed simplification (to the point of dumbing down) the ideas she discusses, but the book is still a useful introduction to thinking about art.

I found myself disappointed with the book in a number of ways, and I'll discuss a couple of them here. First, the author has discussed theory by means of examples, and her choices of artists like Goya and Bacon work well, but some of her other choices (Bill Viola, for example) give the book a somewhat dated feel. A second, more significant disappointment, is the author's discussion of museums. A number of her comments seem uninformed and (in one case regarding the Getty) even snarky. The tone of her writing undermines her discussion of important questions such as how museums should balance the goal of showing worthwhile works with the goal of showing works by a representative group of artists. There is a lot of real-world compromise required to get lenders and donors on board so that exhibitions happen, and lenders, donors and exhibition organizers are, in fact, wrestling with these issues daily.

Overall, the book is a good introduction to a number of theories about art, and perhaps it would work as one of the texts to be used in a high school or college survey class. However, anyone with a serious interest in art will be left wanting something more satisfying on a number of levels.

Good Read, Enjoyable & Insightful
By Phillip C McKee
This was a very interesting book and a good read. However, if you are looking for a primer on art theory, then you need look elsewhere. This gives some insight into the general art theories of the past and today but it isn't organized like a textbook. Instead it has a more meandering structure that makes it more interesting but less instructional. All in all though, I really enjoyed it. The only thing I truly didn't like was that it gave very short shrift to some media that are only the line between craft and art. That would have seemed to be a very good topic for inclusion. But still a good book.

Review

“Lots of project management books teach how to deliver project objectives on-time and within budget. But very few teach how to manage the critical stakeholder dimension. This is the best that I’ve seen because it provides common-sense tools and tips for turning your stakeholders into raving fans”.—Terry Schmidt, PMP & SMP, Founder, ManagementPro.com; author, Strategic Project Management Made Simple: Practical Tools for Leaders and Teams

“Mission driven organizations like The Centers for Families and Children depend on internal and/or external project managers that can successfully lead and manage all the stakeholders involved in creating, designing and executing key strategic projects. As we all know firsthand, it’s the people involved and impacted by the project, “the stakeholders,” that will make or break an organization’s ability to successfully implement a strategic project. Tres Roeder’s book Managing Project Stakeholdersprovides clear, actionable techniques and tools required to effectively “managing the stakeholders.” It is a must read for all of us managing multiple stakeholders in order to effectively implement a project on time and on budget.”—Bernadette M. Kerrigan, Chief Talent Officer

From the Inside Flap

Why do some project managers achieve their goals while others fail? One major reason is that project management is quite different from operational management, requiring a unique set of skills and management strategies which, all too often, must be acquired on the fly by managers thrust into PM roles.

But, according to author Tres Roeder, there is often a more subtle reason why even seasoned project management professionals fail: they lack the necessary "soft skills" required to successfully manage the various stakeholders involved in a project.

Traditional project management thinking, Roeder explains, focuses almost exclusively on the technical and business aspects of running a project, giving little, if any, attention to the complex people side of the equation. But whether it's developing software, organizing a new business unit, or building a shopping mall, the project manager is responsible for assembling and launching a team of stakeholders—people, many of whom may be involved in only one phase of the project—and successfully managing his or her team through to the completion of the project. Clearly, the people management skills required in such transient situations vary widely from those required by most operational managers.

In this groundbreaking guide, Tres Roeder, a globally recognized expert on project management and organizational change, offers time-tested strategies and techniques for effectively identifying, categorizing, prioritizing, managing, and leading project stakeholders. Focusing on the major differences between project management and other types of management—not the least of which is the temporary nature of projects versus the repetitive nature of most operational management tasks—he describes the foundational elements of project stakeholder management. And, with the help of numerous real-world scenarios and case studies, Roeder describes best practices in all key areas of project stakeholder management, including:

  • Project planning and organizing
  • Recruitment and team building
  • Resource allocation
  • Leadership
  • Stakeholder communication
  • Negotiation
  • Time management
  • Managing difficult stakeholders
  • Conflict resolution

Why do some project managers achieve their goals while others fail? Drawing on his years of experience, Tres Roeder answers that question, analyzing common project manager mistakes and offering proven solutions for avoiding them. More importantly, he lays out a proven path to project success, making Managing Project Stakeholders an indispensable resource for managers who find themselves thrust into a project management role. It is also a valuable working reference for project management professionals (PMPs), working toward the fulfillment of the continuing education requirement for maintaining PMP accreditation.

A great book about effective management of project stakeholders
By Yong Li
As George Jucan mentioned in the Foreword of this book, "Projects are done by people (the team) and for people (the stakeholders)", the need to manage project stakeholders is absolutely important and valuable for project management professionals. But little is ever provided by way of guidelines on what / how to do it. This Wiley's book written by Tres Roeder, MBA, PMP, one of the most respected experts in field is full of helpful insights and (both "soft" and "technical" type) techniques with respect to the project stakeholder management. The parts I personally like most for the book are the trendy topics about managing project stakeholders in the global setting (i.e., "Managing Stakeholders in a Virtual World") and managing difficult stakeholders in our real-life projects. No matter what culture we're from, every project management professional could learn from this great book about the strategy and techniques for managing stakeholders effectively at various points in today's projects.

An essential read for most anyone
By John
Most everyone has a use for this and http://www.amazon.com/dp/1456730452/ in their work life, whether it's in an office, on a construction site, or even just trying to get the housing department to demolish an abandoned building.

This book focuses more heavily on technical skills than http://www.amazon.com/dp/1456730452/, but does carry some essential guidelines on buy-in, negotiation, and diplomacy. By "technical skills" I mean classifying stakeholders by power, influence, knowledge, disposition (neutral, resist, support); analyzing those positions; creating a stakeholder register; and outright identifying who is a stakeholder. All of the hard and soft skills are useful, whether you're running tables and charts and project plans on paper or just making connections and assessments in your head.

Besides the basic usefulness of the content inside, the book also has two major qualities about it: the writing is fantastic, well delivered, and easily understood; and the paper, binding, and general hardcover book construction is of the highest quality. It's clear that Tres means to provide a product of the highest quality in all respects, rather than just another book rehashing everything that's already been said before but with a pretty cover that will sell more copies. He presents information both available elsewhere--in http://www.amazon.com/dp/1935589679/, for example--and new information in a clear, easy-to-digest format, and he does so in a physically high-quality format.

For the beginning project manager, start here. This, http://www.amazon.com/dp/1456730452/, http://www.amazon.com/dp/1932735070/, and ultimately http://www.amazon.com/dp/1935589679/ will get you started on your way. The people skills are what make things move the most, even when the technical skills aren't up to polish; but you will need both.
